This is Why I Love Whole Foods

Or other stores like it that sell quality food. These breasts came from the SAME CHICKEN. How do I know? Well, they're attached. These are boneless skinless chicken breasts, and they are still attached in the middle. Instead of the Franken chicken breasts I'd get from another grocer, one of which would probably be double the size of the other, I have two chicken breast halves that came from the same animal. There's just something comforting about that.

A note on measurements

When I’m using herbs and spices and I say a teaspoon of this, or a tablespoon of that, please understand that there is no measuring implement in sight when these things get added to the dish (same goes for liquids, too—the only time I really measure those is when I’m cooking rice or some other grain). What those amounts represent is my own (probably crappy) estimation of how much I really added. So, if you’re thinking about “trying this at home” and the amount I quoted looks off to you—chances are that I’m just a supremely poor estimator of volume. Do what seems reasonable to you.

Things I Adore

Mango. The best fruit on earth. I eat it every morning with the rest of my breakfast (which is typically a high-protien, high-fiber cereal or, if I'm treating myself, whole grain toast with cream cheese or almond butter). It’s sweet and tangy and just delicious…and packed with loads of vitamins and high in fiber. I read a claim somewhere recently that mango and a glass of milk give you all the nutrients you need in a day; I'm not sure that I buy that, but it's still a pleasure to eat every morning (but somewhat less of a pleasure to buy right now, when the buggers cost $2.99 each--since I go through about 5 a week--update here: Glory! They're in season and cheap again!).

The Nordic Track cross-country skier. I believe it to be the world’s best piece of exercise equipment. I’ve had mine for almost 10 years, and use it everyday. Unfortunately, they only make one model now because they’ve waned in popularity (most people probably opt for treadmills or elliptical trainers). I live in fear of them completely discontinuing them; mine is old and squeaky and probably in need of replacement (it takes a lot of abuse from me).

Spring. The weather turns warmer and trees start to bud. You can hear birds singing again. Plus, I can do spring planting and beautify the yard. Also, we signed up for a farm subscription this year so soon we'll be picking up farm-fresh produce every week. And farmers markets will start to open soon, too. And baseball season has started (so we can dream about actually taking time out to go to a game; which we'll probably only do once, at most, the entire season --unfortunately).

Black and white photography. I was very into this about 10 years ago, when I had access to a darkroom. I miss it very much, but take comfort in the art of some of my favorite photographers.

My kitty. Everyone except for myself and Jim thinks she's pure evil (she tends to give that impression to "strangers"--but that's a whole other blog), but she's really the sweetest thing on earth. She's getting up in years, though (she'll be 14 in May), so we try to spoil her as much as we can while we still have the opportunity.
